Czech Union of Journalists during The Prague Spring
Suková, Jana ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Končelík, Jakub (referee)
This bachelor thesis describes the Czech Union of Journalists in the Prague Spring. The aim is not only to analyze details of the situation in the Union of Journalists, who in 1968 went trough a major ideological change, but also on the issue of the journalists in the long term. I want to focus on the development of Union in 1968 and attempt to find answers to these questions: When did the Union became the authority that supported the reform ideas of the late 60's? Why there was a break between the members of the journalistic organization? In addition this work should uncover the relationship between the general development of the situation in Czechoslovakia and the Union of Journalists, to explain some of the attitudes of journalistic organization at the time. Finally, the work does not neglect neither media area as Czechoslovak Television, Czechoslovak Radio and all printed materials which were always shaped mainly by journalists. Therefore this work deals with the close relationship between the Union of journalists and media in general. Especially, this relationship in my work is raised during the first days of the occupation that Czechoslovakia affected on 21st August 1968, during which the media, thanks to relentless work of journalists, has become indispensable organizers of social events.

The thesis is based on comparison of the student protest movement of 1968 in Czechoslovakia and West Germany. The main aim of the thesis is to compare the same and different elements of two student movements with emphasis on students' demands, the way and means of their revolts and the different ideological approaches of the two movements which led to their mutual misunderstanding. The author describes movements in both countries preceding historical events which lead to the protests. The thesis also deals with student protests in other countries in the context of events in West Germany and Czechoslovakia. It then compares the course, demands and the way of student protests in both countries. The main difference between student movements in Czechoslovakia and West Germany was the way of revolt. While Czechoslovak students chose the official way to change the establishment, the protest movement in Germany was rather anti-systemic. Students in both states also came out of different conditions while students in the CSSR protested against a material shortage, resistance in Germany was based on criticism of material surplus. In both countries, however, the same phenomenon of generational conflict occurred. Both movements responded to the international events and protest movements in other countries....

"The Times They Are A-Changin'": The Impact of the 1960s Counterculture on American Society
Ščípová, Michaela ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Kýrová, Lucie (referee)
The 1960s counterculture had a huge impact on American society and questioned many of the American values in order to replace them with their own ideas. Even thought the first trace of youth's revolt against the older generation appeared in the 1950s, it was in the 1960s when the young generation fully rose up and started to fight for their goals. The 1960s counterculture can be divided into two parts, the New Left and the hippies, which both comprised of many different groups and organizations, among them for example the Black Panthers, the Weatherman, Students for a Democratic Society or Vietnam Veterans Against the War. These organizations engaged in many different issues like a civil rights movement or an antiwar movement. The tool for spreading countercultural values was an art - until nowadays countercultural impact is still visible especially in music. Even thought the countercultural movement gradually became radical and in the end of the 1960s split up, its impact on American society is undeniable in some issues such as drug use, perception of sexuality or questioning authorities.
Czechoslovakia as a Mediator of the Soviet Bloc in the Congo Crisis 1960-1963
Mikysková, Jitka ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Valkoun, Jaroslav (referee)
The presented dissertation analyses the role of Communist Czechoslovakia in a period of so called "Congo Crisis" in the years 1960-1963, which began after the independence of the Belgian Congo had been declared. Czechoslovakia was the only Eastern Bloc country which had a representative office in the capital city of Leopoldville over a long period of time and had maintained business and diplomatic relations with the former Belgian Congo since the First Republic; therefore it was an irreplaceable mediator between the newly declared Republic of the Congo and Eastern Bloc countries. The individual chapters rely especially on archival documents and analyse the roles of Patrice Lumumba, UN, separatist government of Antoine Gizenga in the Eastern province, namely in the context of Czechoslovakian foreign policy toward African continent in the observed period. The dissertation is grounded especially on documents of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and archives of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In order to set the dissertation to the international context, it was mainly French, Belgian and Soviet literature, which was used as it offers a very different perspective on the topic in question.
